This is a Specialist Role to provide VAT expertise to the Pan-E VAT Department Manager and real time support to the business.  This role will be responsible for the VAT compliance for HME and its branches and will take ownership for managing the obligations arising from the Senior Accounting Officer legislation across the Honda companies in the UK.


The role requires expertise in UK and European VAT legislation since the company operates through 18 branches situated throughout Europe.


Internal Relationships:  regular contact with the branches, central support functions, UK Honda entities, Genpos (subsidiaries), Factories and Honda Management. The individual must be able to work alongside and gain the confidence of Management and Associates throughout Honda’s global organisation to build strong business partnerships (Logistics, PR, Marketing, Racing, Sales, After Sales, Procurement, Legal, Finance). 


Key Accountabilities:

  1. Provide UK and European VAT advice to the business
  2. Take ownership of the process for meeting the compliance obligations for all VAT, Intrastat, European Sales List, Local Listings and annual reporting obligations for all branches including identifying and delivering improvements.
  3. Take ownership of the review and compliance management of the SAO Group for 8 UK entities
  4. Manage and develop key relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide expert advice to the business.
  5. Effectively use advisors where appropriate
  6. Create training to develop Tax Analysts and the SSC VAT Team.
  7. Manage the process of Pan-E VAT audits
  8. Actively take part in projects for new business and new legal obligation change.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Provision of VAT advice internally, externally and to the Honda business in Europe (in particular HME and its branches).
  • Preparation, reconciliation, analysis and management of issues arising for all returns and adapt as required to meet changing needs (18 Branches – UK Head Office). 
  • Review the UK and branch returns and deadlines to ensure compliance and risk management for timely and accurate reporting of all VAT, Intrastat, Sales Listing and other VAT related local and annual returns.
  • Manage tax audits to promptly and effectively respond to requests and take necessary mitigating actions where appropriate.
  • Provide analysis for business change projects.
  • Identify VAT risks and maximise planning opportunities.  Supporting business units in managing these risks and implementing any relevant planning opportunities. Plan in countermeasures and propose where needed
  • Create and monitor VAT training needs in business, SSC.
  • Keep the business Informed of all relevant VAT rate and legal changes and ensuring systems updated.
  • Identify and act on opportunities to optimise the recovery of input VAT, maximising any cashflow savings opportunities which may exist as well as reacting to case law to interpret impact for Honda and assess any associated risks for compliance.

Knowledge, skills and experience (including key competencies and attributes): 

  • Experienced VAT practitioner with significant previous experience of indirect international taxes preferably with in-house experience at VAT management level.
  • Cross border VAT knowledge – EU regulation experience in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Excellent IT experience (SAP, excel and other ERP systems) for own role and to effectively interface between IT and business requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, quickly able to establish credibility with project leaders and other stakeholders
  • Effective demonstration of business partnering across the organisation to build strong relationships with the HME VAT Team and raise awareness ongoing.
  • Understand and demonstrate respect for others’ values and opinions and promote teamwork.
  • Self-driven and motivated to succeed and gain further knowledge through relevant training and/or qualifications.
  • Show passion and enthusiasm to achieve positive outcomes. 
  • Ability to guide and lead non-technical personnel to technical solutions. 
  • Demonstrated organisational skills, project planning and management.
  • Ability and willingness to travel is important to ‘go to the place’ where the role requires (within EU predominantly).
